The water is clear but yellow, like weak tea

Yellow water that is otherwise perfectly clear is almost always dissolved rather than suspended — tannins leaching from driftwood or leaf litter, or accumulated organics from a tank that is overdue a change. Neither is dangerous on its own, but the second one usually comes with a nitrate reading worth knowing about. Test nitrate, then decide whether you have a wood problem or a maintenance problem.

Test these first

Before anything goes into the tank and before anything comes out of it, get these numbers. They cost fifteen minutes and they decide everything that follows.

  1. Nitratethe nitrate ion — note that drinking water standards are written as nitrate-nitrogen, which is a different number
  2. pH and KHacidity of the water, plus the carbonate buffer that resists changing it

How to confirmThe color started after wood went in and is strongest near it. A glass of tank water held against white paper is clearly amber. pH and KH may both be drifting slowly downward at the same time.

What to doDecide whether you mind. Tannins are harmless and many soft-water species are at home in them. If you do mind, larger and more frequent water changes will keep the color down while the wood exhausts itself, and activated carbon in the filter removes it quickly.

How to confirmYou put them there. The color deepens after each addition and fades between them. KH usually reads low and pH sits toward the soft end.

What to doNothing, if the color is what you wanted. If it is not, remove some of the material and watch KH — heavily tinted tanks often have very little buffer left, which is a separate problem worth catching before the pH starts moving.

Time to resolve: Two to three water changes to lift the color noticeably

How to confirmThere is no wood and no leaf litter, the color built up gradually over months, and nitrate reads above 30 ppm. Often there is a faint musty smell as well.

What to doChange 30% of the water, vacuum the substrate, and then hold a weekly interval for a month. The color will come down in steps rather than at once, because you are diluting a standing pool of dissolved material.

Time to resolve: Three to four weekly changes to clear it fully

How to confirmThe tank was clear for months and then yellowed over two or three weeks. Check when the carbon or resin in the filter was last replaced — most is spent within about a month.

What to doReplace the chemical media, not the biological media. In a cartridge filter where the two are combined, replace one cartridge and leave the other in place so the bacteria have somewhere to stay.

What not to do

These are the moves that make this particular problem worse, and they are all common. Most of them come from wanting to do something substantial when the right answer is something small.

  • Do not treat yellow water as an emergency. It is a cosmetic reading in most tanks, and the tests tell you whether it is anything more.
  • Do not boil driftwood in a pot you cook with, and do not use bleach on wood you intend to put back in the tank.
  • Do not swap every cartridge at once to clear the color. That takes the biological filter out with the carbon.
  • Do not correct the pH that came down with the tannins by adding a pH-up product. Look at KH instead — that is what is actually low.

Keeping it from coming back

If you want wood without the tint, soak new pieces in a bucket for a week or two and change that water daily before the wood goes in the tank — most of the first flush of tannins ends up in the bucket instead. For the maintenance version, the fix is the schedule: a tank that gets a quarter of its water changed every week never accumulates enough dissolved organic material to look like tea in the first place.
